CVMA Internship/Residency Program Information
The CVMA is the internship/residency program approval agency for private practice internship/residency programs in California. The CVMA program is the only one that allows out-of-state veterinarians to practice with an internship/residency temporary license for one year in a private practice setting. Practices approved by the CVMA receive annual reviews as well as periodic on-site inspections.
The Veterinary Medical Board (VMB) can issue a temporary license (expires after one year and is non-renewable) to a qualified intern or resident enrolled in a CVMA approved program without having to pass the California licensing exam. This is a hospital’s chance to provide interns/residents with quality professional experience. The VMB has designated the CVMA as the program approval agency and has established criteria that must be met before a specific program can be granted annual approval.
Business and Professions Code, Section 4848.3 – Temporary License for Applicant.
