Veterinarians are allowed to fulfill up to six hours of the required 36 hours of continuing education every two years through self-study. Self-study includes reading journals, non-interactive internet courses, viewing videos, or listing to audio presentations. Journals or non-interactive online courses that provide certificates of completion after taking and returning an examination are still considered self-study. The completion of an exam does not qualify an article or course as interactive CE.
Each year the Veterinary Medical Board (VMB) audits approximately 10 percent of license renewal applications which is almost 1000 veterinarians. If you are audited, the VMB will require you to provide proof of attendance.
Verification of the six hours of self-study will be on the honor system. However, if you are audited, you may be required to complete an affidavit stating that up to six hours of CE were earned by self-study as part of your documentation.
For the remaining 30 hours of required CE, certificates of attendance should be kept so that copies may be furnished to the VMB upon request.
If you have any questions about CE-related issues, please call the CVMA office at 800-655-2862 or email staff@cvma.net.
