As I am sure you are aware, a minimum of 36 hours of continuing education is now mandatory as a prerequisite to renewal of a Veterinary License in California. The law went into effect in January of 2000.
In an attempt to streamline the CE delivery system, in 2001 CVMA sponsored legislation that removed the necessity for most traditional CE providers to seek “approved provider” status from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). The legislation established a group of pre-approved CE providers that are being referred to as “Statutorily Approved Providers.” This group includes all local Veterinary Medical Associations affiliated with the CVMA, including their sub-chapters. Statutorily Approved Providers do not need to make application to any organization or agency, register with anyone, nor pay any fees in order to provide CE that will be accepted by the California Veterinary Medical Board (VMB). They must however, follow a few simple steps to insure that those attending their CE will receive appropriate credit.
The suggested protocol will hopefully answer most questions and provide a guide to providing appropriate CE and verification of attendance. The sample attendance certificates and CE Co-sponsorship agreement are meant to be just that — samples.
